Robo-AO: autonomous and replicable laser-adaptive-optics and science system

چکیده
We have created a new autonomous laser-guide-star adaptive-optics (AO) instrument on the 60-inch (1.5-m) telescope at Palomar Observatory called Robo-AO. The instrument enables diffraction-limited resolution observing in the visible and near-infrared with the ability to observe well over one-hundred targets per night due to its fully robotic operation. RoboAO is being used for AO surveys of targets numbering in the thousands, rapid AO imaging of transient events and longterm AO monitoring not feasible on large diameter telescope systems. We have taken advantage of cost-effective advances in deformable mirror and laser technology while engineering Robo-AO with the intention of cloning the system for other few-meter class telescopes around the world.

Robo - AO : Initial results from the first autonomous laser guide star adaptive optics instrument
Large surveys, such as the Kepler mission and Palomar Transient Factory, are discovering upwards of thousands of objects which require further characterization at angular resolutions significantly finer than normally allowed by atmospheric seeing. The demands on precious space-based observatories (i.e. Hubble Space Telescope) and large telescopes with adaptive optics (AO) systems (i.e. Keck, VL...
متن کاملDeployment of low-cost replicable laser adaptive optics on 1-3 meter class telescopes
Adaptive optics (AO) is now a productive, routine science capability on the nation’s largest apertures, producing over 100 refereed science publications per year. While the greatest resolution and sensitivity gains have been realized with these AO systems, many science programs such as large astronomical surveys, synoptic monitoring, rapid transient characterization, and programs requiring high...
متن کاملApplications of adaptive optics scanning laser ophthalmoscopy.
Adaptive optics (AO) describes a set of tools to correct or control aberrations in any optical system. In the eye, AO allows for precise control of the ocular aberrations. If used to correct aberrations over a large pupil, for example, cellular level resolution in retinal images can be achieved. AO systems have been demonstrated for advanced ophthalmoscopy as well as for testing and/or improvin...
متن کاملRobo-ao Kepler Planetary Candidate Survey. Ii. Adaptive Optics Imaging of 969 Kepler Exoplanet Candidate Host Stars
We initiated the Robo-AO Kepler Planetary Candidate Survey in 2012 to observe each Kepler exoplanet candidate host star with high-angular-resolution visible-light laser-adaptive-optics imaging. Our goal is to find nearby stars lying in Kepler ’s photometric apertures that are responsible for the relatively high probability of false-positive exoplanet detections and that cause underestimates of ...
متن کاملHigh-speed Imaging and Wavefront Sensing with an Infrared Avalanche Photodiode Array
Infrared avalanche photodiode (APD) arrays represent a panacea for many branches of astronomy by enabling extremely low-noise, high-speed, and even photon-counting measurements at near-infrared wavelengths. We recently demonstrated the use of an early engineering-grade infrared APD array that achieves a correlated double sampling read noise of 0.73 e in the lab, and a total noise of 2.52 e on s...
